Carrot.tech is a waste management data platform, enabling circularity through data insight. Through hardware integrations and end user apps, data is captured for visualization and analysis in the Carrot Insight web platform, along with admin tools for user and integration management.

Caspar was lead designer on the Carrot Insight platform, as well as on the experimental Carrot for Recycling Stations, where a hybrid physical/digital user flow was created for users of a newly built recycling station in Kvam, outside of Bergen.

Balance incetives for all stakeholders

As a product that is typically acquired by management, managed by property managers and used by employees, how do you make ensure success across all stakeholders? A combination of value creation and ease-of-use is key - it is paramount that everyone both sees the larger goal, gets something useful from the system and experiences the use either as joyful, or at the very least feels the burden is proportional to the reward. It is easy to get this balancing act wrong - just look at office printers - but when designing the Carrot systems we were extremely aware of this challenge.

Creating smooth phygital experiences

Although virtually all products now have both a digital and a physical presence, the Carrot apps sit squarely in the middle between the intangible and the tangible worlds. While at their cores being instruments for gathering environmental and economic data, they need to support and augment the physical activities beyond what a purely physical solution can in order to truly justify their existence. This was something we paid close attention to when designing the Carrot apps. To illustrate, the picture above is of one iteration of the recycling station app, which acted both as a key to the station, a travel guide for one’s visit and a payment solution.
